Wegner Masterpieces in Paper Cord

In 1950, Hans J. Wegner designed his now-iconic Masterpieces: models CH22, CH23, CH24, CH25, and CH26. Each one is a gem of chair design, featuring a seat made of hand-woven paper cord. The weaving process for these Masterpieces is done entirely by hand, and you can experience it live at Designcollectors during their Open Days (location: Castelein, Pannestraat 225, 8600 Veurne).

Sustainable Paper Cord: Ecologically Responsible

The Danes rarely mention it, but seat weaving was actually invented by the Swedes, who were looking for a substitute for sisal to bind harvested hay during World War II. As a young designer, Hans J. Wegner was captivated by this natural material and began working with it. Other Danish modernists, such as Børge Mogensen, also embraced the material.

FSC-Certified Wood and Paper Cord

In terms of durability, paper cord is comparable to high-quality upholstery fabric with a high Martindale rating (wear resistance). The only thing to avoid is contact with large amounts of water. Should the paper cord wear out over time, it can be replaced at any time. Every year, chairs are still restored in Carl Hansen & Søn's workshop in Gelsted (DK) using new, expertly woven FSC-certified paper cord.

Artisanship in Practice

Only two (2) models in the Carl Hansen & Søn collection have remained in continuous production: the iconic Wishbone Chair (CH24) and the timeless CH25 lounge chair. Weaving a CH24 takes a skilled craftsman just over an hour. By contrast, weaving the CH25 lounge chair takes 8 to 10 hours and uses approximately 400 metres of cord. This model can also be repaired — meaning re-woven — at any time.
