Reunion of the Collection

The sculptural chairs CH22, CH23, CH24, CH25, and CH26 — all created in 1950 — embody Wegner's unmistakable skill with wood and his deep interest in the relationship between form and comfort. Both the CH24 (better known as the Wishbone Chair) and the CH25 lounge chair have been in continuous production at Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950.

The CH22 and CH23 chairs have also been successfully reintroduced into production. The CH26 was only launched and produced for the first time in 2016, based on original working drawings. Today, Wegner's first masterpieces are finally reunited as a tribute to his craftsmanship and vision.

"The first chairs that Wegner designed for Carl Hansen & Søn were considered very avant-garde at the time. The work had an entirely new and exciting form of expression, but also a simplicity that appealed to many people," explains Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Søn.

It was Holger Hansen, Knud Erik's father, who approached the young Wegner for a collaboration. At the production facility in Gelsted — on the Danish island of Funen — talented cabinetmakers and weavers continue to craft Wegner's iconic designs. Here, outstanding craftsmanship is honored, just as it was in the company's early days, more than 100 years ago.

Characteristics of Early Wegner Designs

Typical of Wegner's early designs — late 1940s and early 1950s — is the focus on ergonomics combined with the tactility of natural materials, such as wood and handwoven paper cord. No less than 400 meters of paper cord are used in the CH25 lounge chair. It takes an experienced weaver more than 10 hours to craft this chair according to the highest standards of the trade.

The CH24 Wishbone Chair is famous for its iconic back- and armrests, crafted from a single piece of steam-bent solid wood. Each paper cord seat is expertly handwoven for optimal durability. The CH24 is a timeless investment in aesthetics, comfort, and sustainability.

Christian Holmsted Olesen, Head of Exhibitions and Collections at Designmuseum Danmark, states: "Wegner's first four chairs possess all the characteristics typical of Danish design: they are rooted in a long history of craftsmanship and inspired by historical furniture types. This means that many people consider them timeless. They are made from natural materials, making them both durable and hard-wearing. They feature organic shapes and a human dimension – and despite their strong artistic expression, they are clearly designed for everyday use."
